How to prevent melioidosis
Residents and visitors to melioidosis-endemic areas avoid direct contact with soil and water, outdoor exposure to heavy rain or dust clouds, do not consume untreated water, and wash food to be eaten raw using boiled or bottled water. If direct contact with soil or water is necessary, we recommend that protective gear such as rubber gloves and boots or waders should be worn. We recommend cessation of smoking (particularly in those with underlying conditions such as diabetes that are known predisposing factors for melioidosis), and discourage the application of herbal remedies or organic substances to wounds [
